The Convenction of Washington, CITES is an international treaty with the purpose of disciplining the commerce of plants and animals, with the intent of defending the conservation.

Molecular genetics allows for the identification of each individual present in a population; applied to the CITES forensic genetics permits the furnishing of data during legal disputes.

This text, very technical and dedicated to those who work in this field, introduces the application of genetic forensics and DNA fingerprinting, through a detailed examination of the structure and function of the DNA, genetic variability in the individual and in the population, molecular genetics-methods of analysis of the genetic variability on the level of DNA, statistical analysis of the data, probability, application of the bayesian statistics to the forensic genetics and finally case studies.
