National Sustainable Development Strategy

The global challenges and poly-crisis emerged in last years called for a greater role of sustainable development, both for better meeting global community needs and for addressing the synergies between the social, environmental and economic dimensions into public action.

In line with the commitments undersigned in September 2015 at the United Nations, Italy has declined the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into the National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS). The Inter-ministerial Committee for Economic Planning (CIPE) Resolution no. 108 firstly approved the NSDS in 2017. In September 2023, the NSDS, updated and revised to 2022, obtained the consensus of the State-Regions Conference and was approved by the Inter-ministerial Committee for Ecological Transition (CITE) Resolution on 18 September 2023.

The National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) is the strategic framework to promote economic, social and environmental development in Italy. The NSDS aims to integrate the principles of the 2030 Agenda into the Italian socio-economic and political context, offering an action plan to address pressing challenges such as climate change, social inequalities and the promotion of a circular economy. Established to ensure a prosperous and resilient future for current and future generations, the Strategy coordinates initiatives at national and local level, promoting partnerships between government agencies, non-governmental organisations, companies and citizens, in order to develop innovative and sustainable solutions. The ultimate goal is to create a more equitable and inclusive society, where every individual can enjoy a high level of well-being without compromising resources and opportunities for future generations.
