Cooperation with Rwanda starts from the Memorandum of Understading signed on November 14, 2016, by the Italian Ministry for the Environment and by the Ministry of Natural Resources (*) of the Republic of Rwanda for the "Cooperation in the field of vulnerability to climate change, risk assessment, adaptation and mitigation".
The Italian Ministry for the Environment co-finances the activities approved under the Memorandum for an amount of 2 million of Euros, which can be integrated with additional funds.
On January 15, 2018, the Ministry for the Environment also signed an Agreement with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), which will provide support for the identification of project proposals to be approved under the Memorandum.
The Work Plan
The Work Plan has been approved at the second meeting of the Joint Committe. It identifies the following areas of interest.
Capacity building and, more specifically, support for policies and strategies of climate change, climate change negotiations and implementing measures, reinforcement of technologies, inventory of greenhouse gases. Promotion and development of renewable energies and enhancement of energy efficiency.
• Promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.
• Integrated management of water resources.
• Sustainable waste management.
On May 8, 2018, the third meeting of the Joint Committe was held in Bonn. On this occasion a concept note has been discussed and approved. The concept note has been prepared by the Ruand Governement with the support of GGGI and has the objective of the rehabilitation and remediation of some urban and periurban humid areas in Kigali, in the view of making the town more and more resilient. The project will involve the "Africa Center for Climate and Sustainable Development and Agenda 2030" promoted by the Italian Ministry for Environment at the 2017 G7 Environment.
