Italy at the United Nations and the Voluntary National Reviews

Italy continuously ensures its contribution to the definition of international policies on sustainable development. Since the preparation of the Rio+20 Conference, Italy has actively participated in the international negotiations for the definition of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2030 Agenda and for the establishment of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development - HLPF.

The HLPF is the main body for the monitoring and the assessing of the commitments on sustainable development adopted with the 2030 Agenda. It has a universal character and ensures the active participation of civil society. At the end of each HLPF, a Ministerial Declaration is adopted, as summary of the results of the HLPF and as guiding document for future international action towards the achievement of SDGs. Each year, at the HLPF, countries are invited to submit the Voluntary National Review (VNR). The VNR is a voluntary and autonomous review process carried out by UN member states to assess and present progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and towards the achievement of SDGs.

Italy regularly presents its Voluntary National Reviews to report on the implementation and monitoring of the National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS). Moreover, an Italian delegation actively participate every year to the High-Level Political Forum, both in the plenary sessions and in participating to and/or organizing side events. With the same approach, Italy participates to the activities of the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development for the UNECE Region, the regional forum that, together with the other regional fora of the United Nations, contributes every year to the elaboration of the contents of the High-Level Political Forum, bringing the vision of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Region.
