Great satisfaction for the conclusion of the project, promoted by the Ministry of the Environment, which has equipped the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca, the largest hospital in North Africa, with solar thermal systems for water heating.
The initiative was carried out within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the MATTM and the Moroccan counterpart AMEE, (Agence Marocaine pour l'Efficacité Energétique), with the active technical support of the Milan Polytechnic.
Natural and forced circulation systems, powered by almost 400 solar panels fixed on the hospital roofs, make possible the electricity reduction through the contribution of solar energy. Solar thermal systems allow the production of domestic hot water in many hospital wards, including pediatrics, traumatology, haematology, psychiatry as well as in the kitchens.
Systems’ supply and installation works were carried out by the Moroccan company Solamed-Med Town, winner of the tender promoted by AMEE, with funding from the MATTM.
A series of site inspections were necessary to map and view the pre-existing premises and systems, so as to be able to size and design the solar systems for installation on the hospital buildings deemed most suitable. Once the plants were designed, the MATTM/POLIMI team took care of drafting the technical specifications concerning the tender, and supported the Moroccan partners in supervising both works and final testing.
The project also envisaged an on-site training component for the technicians of the Casablanca hospital, in order to guarantee correct and efficient maintenance of the systems over time .
To date, due to an investment of around 320,000 Euros, a total of 41 users are served, 55,800 liters of water storage, and the surface occupied by the solar collectors extends for 772 m².
The General Director Francesco La Camera, commenting the successful completion of the project, following the last technical test which took place on June 27, recalled that: 'The project not only guaranteed hot water in important hospitalization areas, with a relative reduction in costs for the purchase of electricity and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but has enhanced the Italian expertise in synergy with local companies. A concrete example, therefore, of how environmental cooperation focused on the energy transition can start multiple virtuous mechanisms and processes of sustainable development".
